On a hot summer day like today, there are no excuses needed for enjoying a refreshing scoop of ice cream, but given that it is also National Ice Cream day, it is pretty much required to dig in to your favorite frozen treat. Fortunately, there are loads of great places to treat yourself to a cone (or a cup), so there is no way to go wrong. Offering everything from hard packed or soft serve to frozen yogurt and artisan creations, there is a huge assortment of amazing frozen delights right here in the Kennebunks.
Dock Square is home to what feels like dozens of spots for an icy treat, especially when you count all of the
restaurants that offer an assortment of ice creams, but there are some stand outs that deserve special mention. No trip to New England would be complete without a stop at Ben & Jerry’s and their Vermont-made hand packed ice cream in countless flavors with creative names, and that is probably the closest spot to the Maine Stay. Even on a scorcher of a day like today, it is just two blocks away, and your cone surely won’t be totally melted on that short walk! Just a stone’s throw from Ben & Jerry’s is Aunt Marie’s, a take out window that is literally a hole in the wall. Serving up freshly squeezed lemonade and Gifford’s Maine made ice cream.
Rococo Ice Cream deserves special mention for the adult crowd – once voted one of the nation’s top ten ice cream shops, they serve up small batch ice cream crafted with similar consistency to gelato, but the milk fat of ice cream. Who knew that the USDA specifies those sort of things?! Anyhow, they get top marks for creativity and it always feels good to support other small businesses. Now you can also find their heavenly creations at their Ogunquit Maine location and Bob’s Clam Hut in Wells. While you can never be certain what flavors might show up on the menu, their Spicy Rocky Road and Raspberry Chambord with Goat Cheese are personal favorites.
For frozen yogurt, check out Yo Goody in Lower Village Kennebunk, and while that isn’t technically ice cream, it is worth mentioning for any non-National Ice Cream Day day. Head out of town to the pick up window at Mabel’s Lobster Claw on your way to Colony Beach and enjoy hand scooped ice cream at another quaint take out window. But the view there can’t be beat and Peppermint Stick ice cream is always on the menu, which earns major bonus points from me. Out by Goose Rocks Beach is the appropriately named Goose Rocks Dairy – with dozens of homemade flavors packed with incredible toppings, a small is huge and a large is gut-busting, even for a hearty eater like me! But no list of ice cream shops in the Kennebunkport Maine area would be complete without Dairy Queen, a classic summertime staple that never disappoints. So dig into your Blizzard or classic sundae and you’ll sure to think back to those fond childhood memories.
No matter which one (or all) of these spots that you check out, they are all fantastic spots to cool off this summer and indulge on national Ice Cream Day!
