Summer has just flown by, and, like it or not, autumn is coming quickly, but Labor Day and early September are perfect times to enjoy the last bits of summer on the Maine Coast. It’s a little known fact that the ocean water is the warmest come September, so that means it is actually the ideal time for a beach vacation. But given that we kick off summer with Memorial Day Weekend, it only seems fair to call Labor Day Weekend the farewell to summer – though all of us who know Maine well know that isn’t quite true – there is about another two weeks of amazing summer weather into September. That said, Labor Day Weekend is the perfect time to enjoy a long weekend in Kennebunkport.
If you are like me and love a chance to soak up the sunshine on the beach, there are plenty to check out. The
Kennebunk Beaches (Gooch’s, Middle, and Mother’s) all have their own personalities. I like Gooch’s for sunbathing on the sand, Middle for reading and enjoying real peace and quiet, and Mother’s for frolicking with families. But a long weekend is the perfect time to enjoy some of the hidden coves like Halcyon Way and Turbat’s Creek. Or head over to the Wells Reserve and trek (I use that term loosely, because you can definitely do it in flip flops) down the Beach path to the always peaceful stretch along the water.
You could take the opportunity to explore Goose Rocks Beach or even head further north to Biddeford Pool or Ferry Beach in Saco. Sometimes, though, it’s important to mix things up, so renting kayaks or bikes from Coastal Maine Kayak and Bike is a perfect way to see the coast of Kennebunkport Maine from a slightly different perspective. But for an even more relaxing tour of the coastline, check out the peaceful schooner rides on Schooner Eleanor. Built right in the Kennebunkport Harbor, this three masted schooner is stunning and offers tours down the river and out into the Atlantic Ocean for small groups, meaning the rides will always be a calm and relaxing experience. Plus, they won’t go out in rocky seas, so you can feel confident that your stomach will stay settled.
Obviously, some of the best things about summer getaways are the ice cream, the blueberry pie, and the lobster rolls, and fortunately Kennebunkport is home to all of that and more. So get ready, because there are lots more blogs to come about delicious spots to indulge right here in town. Don’t miss out on the last few weeks of summer and the chance to sneak in one last summer getaway on the Maine Coast, because there is so much to do and enjoy!
