During breakfast today, we were serenaded by the sounds of happy cheering, as hundreds of runners passed by the Maine Stay for the Maine Coast Marathon. Years ago, this marathon wasn’t terribly popular and faded away, but about 5 or so years ago it came surging back and was sold out for both the Marathon and Half Marathon months before the start date! It has been so much fun seeing the crowds blossom and the loads of support for runners all along the route.
The Maine Stay is situated almost exactly at the halfway point (runners keep this in mind – it would be pretty darn perfect to stop into your very own room for a real bathroom break and a dry shirt!), and that means that with a 7:30 am start time, many of the pack are crossing in front of our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast just as we are dishing up breakfast to the second seating at 9:30 am! Today was a spectacular spring day, so that meant that enthusiastic guests enjoyed our gourmet breakfast while cheering on the runners. Starting at Kennebunk High School and finishing up in Biddeford Pool at University of New England, most of the course winds its way through Kennebunkport Maine and offers incredible views of the Maine Coast (I guess the race organizers probably realized that too).
There is no question that 26.2 is a tremendous feat, so if that isn’t quite in the cards (it sure isn’t for me!), the half marathon also boasts a similarly scenic course, even though it features a loop style route. It is focused mostly in the Biddeford Pool and Goose Rocks area, but doesn’t (unfortunately) pass by the Maine Stay – even still we’re cheering for those runners too!
If you are a cheerleader for one of the runners, there are tons of spots to meet them and share your support – and on a morning like today, the Kennebunk Beaches, Dock Square, and, of course, the finish line were hopping with friends and family. But our favorite spot is right in front of the Maine Stay! There is no question that the 2019 Maine Coast Marathon and Half Marathon was a great success, and we are already looking forward to the 2020 Maine Coast Marathon!
