Summertime is truly spectacular on the Maine Coast, and it almost seems crazy to get your fitness inside, so this summer you can enjoy “beach bootcamp” fitness classes on the water in the Kennebunks. Get Out There Fitness has been holding bootcamp style classes since before bootcamps became cool, and it was about 10 years ago that I attended my very first class – but it is every bit as good (or even better!) today.
Hosted on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Get Out There Fitness hosts inspiring workouts bright and
early right on the water. Sometimes held in Kennebunkport on Colony Beach and sometimes on the Kennebunk Beaches, the group meets at 6:15 am for workouts that can be tailored for a wide range of fitness levels. The classes mix body weight exercises with cardio in a motivating (and not intimidating) environment, but the setting is what truly makes these classes extraordinary – I mean what could be a better backdrop than the panoramic views of the ocean?! And while you will find many locals or warm-weather resident regulars, visitors are absolutely welcome for their drop in rate classes.
But if the idea of a sunrise workout doesn’t get you excited (or perhaps the 6:15 start time isn’t your fave), there are plenty of other options for getting your fitness fix in the Kennebunkport Maine area. Just walk through Dock Square to Village Yoga in Lower Village and check out the classes held several times a day with options ranging from pretty intense, so gentle and relaxing or even prenatal yoga (for those of you on your baby moon getaway). Those looking for more traditional gym settings should consider the Fitness Nut House, a small local business with a comfortable atmosphere and great classes, or Quest Fitness, the biggest gym in the area. Perhaps you’re a fan of the Cross Fit workouts? Never fret, you can check out CrossFit KGB right near downtown Kennebunk.
Lest we forget the open air options like running, kayaking, or biking along the beautiful beaches of Kennebunkport or hiking the trails of the area’s nature preserves. This summer, whether you get your steps in my preferred way – walking to get ice cream in Dock Square – or getting sweaty with a tough workout, you can enjoy the fitness opportunities that abound in Kennebunkport Maine.
