On a picture perfect day like today, the best possible way to spend lunchtime is with a locally made lobster roll while sitting on the Maine Coast. There are countless ways to prepare prepare lobster, when it comes to lunch, one stands out from the crowd, and that is with the classic lobster roll. Add a little sea breeze and quaint scenes around Kennebunkport, and you’ve got an Insta-perfect afternoon.
Home to a vibrant culinary scene, Kennebunkport Maine is home to a huge range of restaurants and dining establishments, but for a classic “Maine” lunch, I prefer to avoid white linens (or linens at all) and opt for the picnic table style meal. Make it a true picnic and it’s even better!
One of my personal favorite ways to enjoy a lobster roll is from The Clam Shack – a true shack
situated on the bridge downtown. It’s a walk up and take a number kind of place, but there are some picnic tables nearby and a few benches along the Kennebunk River. Or you can take lunch to go while exploring Kennebunkport Maine. Here you choose between melted butter or mayonnaise to garnish your fresh lobster, served in freshly baked buns and they are delish! A few years ago, The Clam Shack and nearby Alisson’s Restaurant went head to head in Food Wars, but even though the Shack took the cake, both are great. Looking for a spot with inside seating? Head to downtown Kennebunkport to Alisson’s Restaurant and treat yourself to a sit down meal fit for a travel king. Featured on the Travel Channel’s Food Wars, Alisson’s knows how to make a killer lobster roll. They use knuckle and claw meat only garnished with mayo, and this is sure to fill you up. Plus, if it’s especially warm, their AC will be most welcome.
Run by local fishermen, Cape Pier Chowder House sits right on the water overlooking Goat Island Lighthouse. Watch the lobstermen bring in their traps and unload on the dock or the boats bobbing in the Cape Porpoise Harbor while enjoying fresh lobster rolls in the sea air. They do serve up some mean fried fish, but their lobster roll and chowder are personal faves. At nearby Nunan’s Lobster Hut you can also ensure some of the freshest meat available. The Nunan family has been lobstering in Kennebunkport for generations and they head out on the water every morning to catch the lobsters for the evening haul. You can only enjoy this at dinnertime (or have a late lunch at 5, but bring cash, because plastic is only allowed in bib form here. Lest I forget, you can always have a specially made picnic lobster roll lunch for two delivered to your door right here at the Maine Stay Inn – complete with adult beverages, chips, and dessert, we use fresh picked lobster meat and pack it in a special insulated cooler for you to enjoy wherever you want – the Maine coast is your… lobster, so get crackin’!
