It seems like the summer has flown by, and it is hard to believe that it is already mid September, but that means that Apple Picking Season is here! We’re starting to see those classic paper baskets in the grocery stores, and now they are filled to the brim with the crops from local Maine orchards. No matter your age, there is something so enjoyable about picking apples, and something that really gets you excited about the fall season (even more so than pumpkin spice lattes!)
Even though Kennebunkport is a seaside community with glorious beaches, you don’t have to go far to get to soil that is great for farming, including growing apples! Nearby Spiller Farm has a younger orchard with a great variety of apples, which means that you can pick your own (or just shop their quaint farm store, though that isn’t as much fun) throughout the growing season. Their trees might be a little on the smaller side, but they offer so many types of apples you won’t even notice! Plus, their pumpkin wagon rides are not to be missed. Venture a little further inland to check out Giles Family Farm. Located in Alfred, Maine, their orchards are a little more mature, and you’ll find cider and cider doughnuts during their apple picking weekends. This weekend their Macintosh and Cortland apples were at the peak of ripeness and the weather today was ideal for an outdoor adventure!
Kelly Orchards was founded in 1982 and remains committed to the environment, using eco-friendly pesticides to keep you and mother earth happy. They are open through Thanksgiving and are a great spot to enjoy a fall apple picking experience. Libby & Sons also offers a full fall experience, with apples of countless variety, with harvests well into November. You can bring the whole family for the full fall experience, including donuts, kettle corn, and my personal favorite – caramel apples! You don’t have to venture far inland to find the classic New England orchards of your Instagram dreams – so plan your fall getaway to Kennebunkport Maine today!
