After a slightly cool and cloudy early May, Memorial Day Weekend ushered in summertime in style with glorious summer weather here on the Maine Coast! Earlier in the week, sun and warmer weather made the perfect setting for working on the gardens here at the Maine Stay, and by Friday, the gardens, too, were ready for the weekend – and the start of summer.
Greeting guests on Friday afternoon, we whipped up what is sure to become a fast favorite –
cold brew coffee (in addition to our usual peach sun tea) and some delicious sweets. Although Friday was on the windy side, Saturday dawned sunny and bright – perfect for exploring on the Maine Coast. Biking and walks on the beach were perfect Saturday activities, and while the water was a *touch* cold for swimming in my book, there were loads of kiddos frolicking in the surf. None of them had blue lips or, between shivers, denied being cold. Nope none. Kidding, of course – this was every child you could see on the beach!
Sunday was decidedly a beach day, with temperatures soaring to 80 degrees and bright blue skies! So we doled out beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs like candy on Halloween. But others decided to enjoy the summer weather on the water with Schooner rides like the Schooner Eleanor or the Pineapple Ketch, while still others tried their hands at kayaking on the Kennebunk River. But my favorite part of the day was grabbing a drink on the deck of a local restaurant at sunset – it was a stunner, and, naturally, I didn’t take a single picture.
Memorial Day itself dawned bright and beautiful – perfect for the annual Kennebunkport Maine Memorial Day Parade! Although this year two of our favorite residents were noticeably absent, and George and Barbara Bush were missed greatly. Even still, the parade was an amazing success and while honoring those lost in service, also ushered in the start of summer here on the Southern Maine coast. Fortunately, thought the streets get closed for the parade, guests of the Maine Stay Inn can meander down to watch because it’s such a short stroll from the inn! But for those who missed it, there’s another excellent parade this afternoon at 2pm in Kennebunk – so grab a savory croissant for lunch at Boulangerie (A Proper Bakery) and don’t miss out on the show! No matter how you celebrate Memorial Day Weekend, there is lots of fun to be had here in Kennebunkport, and you are sure to enjoy it!
