It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than a week away, but that means that Christmas Prelude is right around the corner! Kennebunkport’s 38th Christmas Prelude begins December 5, 2019 and runs through the 15th, which means ten days of incredible holiday festivities. And even though the Turkey hasn’t even been baked yet, it is time to get the Prelude festivities going – or at least get your plans ready!
Now in its 38th year, Christmas Prelude, which started as a small “thank you” from the Kennebunkport businesses to the community, has become one of the nation’s best Christmas festivals. It is challenging to talk about the best things
about Prelude because everything is amazing! Each weekend kicks off with an incredible tree lighting, which often top the list of the best parts of Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude, but it’s the classically “Maine” bits that make this festival extra special. Santa arrives by lobster boat, the signature Cape Porpoise Tree is made of lobster traps, and lobsters are served up the old fashioned way in a local firehouse. Dogs from near and far strut their stuff, and crazy hats flood Dock Square during the Crazy Hat Parade, but my favorite part is unquestionably the Walk to Bethlehem. (Yes, we really do recreate Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn right in the Kennebunkport Historic District. Spoiler: the Maine Stay Inn doesn’t have a stable or a manger!). Truthfully, though, the entire schedule of events is spectacular!
You can fill the moments between amazing events with shopping at the countless craft fairs, or by snacking on the freshly roasted chestnuts you’ll find around town. Sing your heart out with fellow carolers, or nibble your way through cookie tours of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at some of our favorite events that make Christmas Prelude extra special. No matter how you spend your Christmas Prelude experience, you are certain to get into the holiday season with a trip Maine’s signature Christmas Festival, right here in Kennebunkport Maine!
