Lobster is often synonymous with Maine, and for good reason, since 80% of the nation’s lobsters are caught off the Maine Coast, and here in Kennebunkport there are countless places to enjoy this ocean delicacy. But there is something special about lobster from an honest-to-goodness lobster shack. Sure, a lazy man’s lobster (de-shelled for your ease of enjoyment) is a lovely thing to enjoy with a white tablecloth, but digging in with a plastic bib and wet naps for your fingers is a classic summer treat that just screams “Maine!”
Right on the bridge between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport sits The Clam Shack – now it’s not technically a lobster
shack, it is a great spot to get a lobster roll. It’s not the spot to get a whole lobster (although you can get one at the shop next door), but with a walk-up window, it is just right for enjoying a meal on the run… or a stroll, rather, along the water ways of Kennebunkport Maine. So grab a seat at one of the picnic benches or the bridge-side bench seats and dig in, because these award-winning lobster rolls are not to be missed.
Head out to Cape Porpoise and take a seat on the pier, overlooking Cape Porpoise Harbor and the working fish pier. Here you’ll find Cape Pier Chowder House, a little shack that sits right on the water and is run by local fishermen. Here you can get lobster in the rough along with all the fixings – chowder included, of course! Their freshly fried seafood is also amazing, but there is something particularly delightful about enjoying a lobster dinner in the sea air. If someone in your group isn’t a seafood lover, try the restaurant next door (Pier 77 and the Ramp) for more options – or just leave that person at home!
Not too far from the pier sits Nunan’s Lobster Hut (which is a step up from a shack IMO), which is one of my absolute favorite spots in all of Kennebunkport. The Nunan Family has been lobstering in town for generations and they head out early in the morning for the daily catch and serve it up at night. It’s a cash only operation, so come prepared, but it is also one of the best spots around to get a great deal on lobster! I personally recommend their nightly twin lobster special, because the smaller lobsters have sweet and soft meat and you don’t have to work quite so hard to get it out of the shell. Their chowder is pretty delicious, but the pie? It’s out of this world! They have been serving dinner this way since 1953, and they shouldn’t change a darn thing, because it is delicious!
Now this doesn’t come close to addressing all the great places to get lobster in Kennebunkport or in nearby communities on the Southern Maine Coast, but these three lobster shacks take the cake when it comes to the low key summer shack vibe. So get your bib and Purell ready because there is plenty of lobster to enjoy in town this summer!
