No vacation destination would be complete without a good golf course, and as a truly outstanding vacation spot, the Kennebunkport area has more than a few to suit your style. Whether you are partial to the front nine or the back nine, or just nine holes at all, there are several beautiful options in the area. On a stunning early summer day like today, the links are a truly wonderful place to be.
Right in the heart of Kennebunkport Maine sits a private club that welcomes public play, and is well known for two famous members – former Presidents George H.W. Bush (41) and George W. Bush (43). But that doesn’t mean that you won’t get a tee time at the Cape Arundel Golf Club! So let us do the leg work, and have the Maine Stay Inn reserve your time for you and your party. Originally built in 1896 by early residents and vacationers to the Kennebunks, it was expanded by renowned designer Walter J. Travis. Then in 2009 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places – it’s quite the place to tee off!
Just on the other side of “the bridge,” as we locals call the narrowest crossing of the Kennebunk River between Kennebunk’s Lower Village and Kennebunkport’s Dock Square, you’ll find Webhannet Golf Club. It’s an 18 hole par 71 course featuring tidal water hazards and soft sand traps that quite resemble the very nearby soft sandy Kennebunk Beaches. And at certain spots on the challenging course, you will even hear the sound of crashing surf! It is a truly elegant course, and you can enjoy a tour of the holes before reserving a time to play.
Need to spend a little time on your short game? Check out the putting greens of Hillcrest Golf. They also offer a par 3 course for those who don’t want to spend the “hole” day on the green and instead enjoy the incredible beauty and activities that abound here in Kennebunkport. Although maybe it is your long game that needs work, and Hillcrest is the perfect spot, with a driving range as well. Although not officially in the Kennebunks, you don’t have to head too far over the border to Wells to find another great spot for a par 3 course – Merriland Farms Golf Course. Now in its 26th season, you’ll surely enjoy the rolling hills surrounded by farmland. Plus, their adorable cafe is a great spot to stop for lunch!
If you are anything like me, though, and the closest you come to succeeding in golf is the miniature kind, there are plenty of options for you in the area as well. Stay tuned for more on those fun-filled courses for all ages and abilities like the Wonder Mountain Fun Park in Wells or Wells Beach Mini Golf in, well, Wells Beach. This year don’t miss out on your ideal spot, and allow the concierge staff at the Maine Stay Inn to take care of all of the details when golfing in Kennebunkport Maine!
