After a nearly unbearable heat wave scorched New England, a rain storm passed through the Maine coast today bringing cooler temperatures, but that also meant that it was a perfect day to enjoy some amazing indoor activities. As a year round destination, Kennebunkport has tons of great things to do when it isn’t exactly beach weather, so it is hard to choose the best options for this rainy day. Great shops and galleries grace the streets and breweries and distilleries offer tasting rooms and tours, and the local library has an amazing book sale every day of the year (minus holidays, of course), but there are a few things that are truly unique to the Kennebunks that should not be missed.
While the idea of visiting a museum on a rainy day is nothing new, Kennebunkport does it like nowhere else – with the Seashore Trolley Museum. In this town of barely 3000 year round residents, you’ll find the world’s largest collection of electric railway cars and streetcars from every city in the nation, as well as many international locales. You can hop aboard a vintage train and enjoy a ride through the woods of Kennebunkport Maine. Want to see the restoration efforts behind the scenes? Check out the observation gallery at the Town House Shop. It is a true gem that visitors of all ages are sure to enjoy.
Head over to downtown Kennebunk for one of our favorite spots no matter the season – recently restored to its original identity, Garden Street Bowl and Crotux Restaurant combines incredible food in a sleek, modern setting with a bowling alley and game arcade. Try your hand a indoor corn hole or grab signature cocktails at the bar while getting set for some old fashioned bowling with a luxe vibe. If bowling isn’t your thing their assortment of arcade games is stellar and the bar is so chic you hardly know you’re in a ‘bowling alley” – clanging of pins aside!
On your way over to Garden Street, stop at Old House Parts, an enormous and incredible architectural salvage company. With everything from door knobs, door knockers, and drawer pulls to complete staircases and fireplaces, anyone is sure to be in awe at the assortment of historic home parts. That said this is the DIY-er’s dream with so much inspiration for your home project or weekend refresh. We never leave without inspiration for the Maine Stay Inn, and have used these awesome finds in all corners of the inn from our transition Main house to modern cottage suites.
Of course, there are countless ways to spend a day in Kennebunkport, even when you might not want to be outside, but these three often top our list because they showcase the uniqueness of the Kennebunks. If these don’t strike your fancy, however, everyone at the Maine Stay is happy to help to suggest amazing ways to fill your days, no matter the weather – let us be your concierge!
