Now that September is really underway, it is definitely apple season in New England, and the apple picking experience is one of the best things about fall! Granted, there are lots of things to love about fall in Maine (and New England in general), but the Kennebunkport, Maine area really comes alive each autumn.
A recent search of had “apple picking” at the top of the list for fall activities, and is always one of the first things I think of when the leaves start to change and the evening air takes on a slight chill. And fortunately, there are tons of great places to pick a bushel of apples – or just a few! But when thinking of the best spots to stop for your classic “fall” fun, 3 top the list:
Spiller Farm sits on the Kennebunk and Wells border, usually about a 15 minute drive from the Maine Stay Inn. On the drive, take a stroll at Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve, or just drink in the changing of the leaves. Spiller Farm is the ideal spot for apple picking, but you might even get lucky enough to snag some late season peaches or any number of fruits and vegetables. Heading to Maine after apple season? Not to worry because their fields will be full of pumpkins in the late fall!
Head a bit further inland to Limerick, ME where you will find Libby & Son U-Picks. About another 15 minutes from Spiller Farm, you will find more beautiful fall foliage, and sometimes on taller hills you can see to Mount Washington on a clear day. Their various crops were ready for picking in July, and now apples are ready for pies, cakes and doughnuts.
Fill your Instagram feed with classic Maine lighthouses and apple picking at Randall Orchards, just 15 minutes from Portland. Owned and operated by the Randall Family since the early 20th century, you will find mature tress in the orchard – but be kind to the trees and try not to climb them! While you are there, don’t miss out on a chance to enjoy some homemade cider from their cider mill! But no matter where you decided to adventure during the day, there are plenty of apple orchards in Maine to explore.
So grab your bag (and probably a new jar of cinnamon) because fall baking with fresh apples is the perfect way t0 celebrate the season – trust us because we sure love fall themed breakfasts here at the Maine Stay Inn!
